The Boston Housing Authority’s Department of Public Safety/Police Department is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency that works closely with BHA management staff, residents, community organizations and other law enforcement agencies to provide additional neighborhood policing and security services throughout the Authority’s public housing developments in Boston. The BHAPD is one of only four nationally accredited police departments in Massachusetts.

The Department consists of two divisions, the Police Division and the Senior Safety Division.

The Police Division is currently staffed by approximately 26 sworn officers and 7 supervisors, including the Chief. The Boston Housing Authority Police serve as an enhancement to the policing services that BHA residents receive from the Boston Police Department, which continues to provide emergency services to BHA residents. As such, BHA Police provide additional patrols, including vertical patrols through BHA buildings, meet with residents and BHA staff regarding quality of life and other issues of concern.

The Senior Safety Division consists of a Senior Safety Coordinator, approximately 54 full-time Safety Officers and 9 part-time Safety Officers. The Senior Safety Division provides security coverage at 14 BHA elderly/disabled developments, the BHA’s administrative offices at 52 Chauncy Street and at the John J. Murphy Housing Service Center at 56 Chauncy Street in downtown Boston. Security coverage at BHA elderly/disabled developments is determined by the City of Boston, based on a security survey that is conducted by the Inspectional Services Department as mandated by City ordinance.

The Department also maintains a dispatch unit to receive citizen calls for service and dispatch appropriate police or other emergency personnel. There are currently 7 full-time dispatchers providing 24-hour, 7-day-a-week service.

The Department’s administrative staff also includes an Accreditation Manager and Staff Analyst.

The BHA Department of Public Safety is located at 129 Amory Street in Jamaica Plain.
