Housing Services
The Boston Housing Authority is a public agency that provides subsidized housing to low and moderate income individuals and families. The Authority administers two distinct housing programs.

Applicants may call (617) 988-4200 or (617) 988-4549 if further information is needed and or if they require a reasonable accommodation. Please direct questions or concerns to the Occupancy Department at 617-988-3400 or occupancy@bostonhousing.org

Public Housing
The Boston Housing Authority manages 60 public housing developments, a few of which have both state and federal components. The BHA owns and manages some scattered site properties throughout the City of Boston as well. Of the 60 developments, 36 are designated as elderly/disabled developments and 24 are designated as family developments. Two of the 24 family developments have elderly/disabled housing on site and one of the elderly developments has designated units for families. The BHA currently owns approximately 14,000 units of housing in Boston and houses about 27,000 people under the public housing program.

Rental Assistance (Section 8)
In addition, the authority administers approximately 11,000 rental assistance vouchers that allow families to rent in the private market and apply a subsidy to their rent. With this assistance, residents are able to pay approximately 30-40 percent of their income toward rent, with the BHA paying the remainder. The BHA helps provide housing to approximately 25,000 people under this program.

The Section 8 tenant based voucher program waiting list is now closed.

BHA is currently accepting applications for its mod rehab project-based section 8 voucher programs. In order to apply for these programs, applicants must qualify for priority one status . These programs utilize vouchers which are tied to specific properties in locations throughout the city of Boston. Some of them also serve special populations such as persons under going substance abuse recovery, persons looking for Single Room Occupancy (SRO)housing, and persons with mental illness living in shelters.

The public housing waiting list is currently open. To apply follow the prompts.
