Mary Ellen McCormack is the BHA's oldest development, located opposite the beach in South Boston. Mary Ellen McCormack offers 1014 one, two and three bedroom apartments in 22 three-story buildings and 152 row houses. Constructed in the 1930s, Mary Ellen was the first public housing development in New England and it remains one of the largest. Originally called Old Harbor Village, the complex was renamed after the mother of John W. McCormack, former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, who fought for housing and human rights. Rents are calculated at 30% of a resident’s income. Residents have the option of choosing a flat rent as well.

Location:

Mary Ellen McCormack is located in South Boston near many businesses and services. Near the complex are a Stop & Shop, Star Market and Flanagan’s Market. A variety of attractions are in the area as well, including the John F. Kennedy Library at Columbia Point, Castle Island, Carson Beach and Curley Recreation Center. Columbia Park, a large city recreational facility with ball fields, a playground and a basketball court is located across the street - walk through the park and you are at the beach. The University of Massachusetts is a ten-minute walk away. Several churches are located nearby also.

Health care is available nearby at the South Boston Health Center, and a short bus/car ride away at Boston University Medical Center. The Gieger/Gibson Health Center is close by on Dorchester Avenue.

Transportation:

The Andrew Square and JFK/UMass MBTA stations are both within walking distance of the complex. These stations provide access to the Red Line. Bus service is available at Andrew Square to Cambridge along Mass Avenue, to the Longwood Medical area and to Logan Airport. A free shuttle service is available to Andrew Square station and another shuttle bus provides easy access to the South Bay Shopping Center.
