The Department of Housing and Urban Development recently posted the Boston Housing Authority’s Public Housing Assessment Score for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2005. The overall score of 87 points, its highest score yet, places the Authority at the very high end of the standard performer category and just 3 points short of the high performer category.
“We are pleased that the BHA continues to improve its grade in this HUD assessment. We continue to make progress in improving the quality of the lives of the thousands of residents who call public housing in Boston home,” stated Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “Sustaining this progress will become increasingly difficult as the federal resources for public housing continue to dwindle.”
The overall score is an improvement over those of the last 5 years, moving to 87 from a score in 2000 o f 78.
“We hope to work closely with our residents and HUD staff as we strive to further improve the day-to-day management at the Boston Housing Authority,” Henriquez added.
Since the year 2000 HUD has used the PHAS system to grade public housing authorities on their performance in four (4) critical areas: physical condition of the properties, financial management, management and resident satisfaction. (see attached)
“The BHA staff is working hard each and every day. Although, much remains to be done, we are clearly moving in the right direction,” added Edna Bynoe, a resident of the Orchard Gardens housing development and president of the Orchard Gardens Task Force.
