Job Title: SENIOR ACCOUNTANT (contract)

General Description: Under the limited supervision of the Accounting Area Supervisor, and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and practices, and in conformance with special regulations as promulgated by supervising agencies, performs professional accounting work requiring knowledge of the theory and practice of collecting, classifying, recording, examining and analyzing data and the related records of financial transactions

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Performs technical accounting work of a complex nature involving assets, liabilities and reserves, encumbrances, receipts and expenditures, accruals and correcting entries.
  • Collects, classifies and inputs accounting data on to a computerized ledger.
  • Reconciles account balances on the general ledger system through the use of source data shown on journal registers.
  • Analyzes and interprets summary data contained on computer printouts.
  • Opens, maintains and closes general ledgers.
  • Maintains subsidiary ledgers and supporting schedules.
  • Analyzes the effects of accounting transactions upon account relationships.
  • Evaluates alternative means of treating transactions.
  • Recommends the need for new or changed financial controls.
  • Prepares operating and financial statements for submission to Management and supervising agencies.
  • Analyzes variances between budgeted and actual data.
  • Interprets the meaning of accounting records, reports and statements, in meetings with other staff and line departments.
  • Performs limited budgetary work as may be required.
  • Makes cash forecasts; prepares vouchers for submission to higher agencies and subordinate groups.
  • Participates with the Director of Finance and Accounts in meetings with accounting officials of the city, state and federal governments.
  • Performs internal audits of a moderately complex nature, as may be required.
  • Assists in the training and supervision of accountants and other accounting personnel as directed by supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications & Experience: Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in business administration or related field with significant coursework in accounting. High level of proficiency in accounting, as indicated by a thorough knowledge of the fundamental doctrines, theories, principles and terminology of accountancy. Familiarity and understanding of related disciplines, such as business law, statistics and general management preferred. The candidate should possess an interest and aptitude to perform analytical and creative work. Minimum of three (3) years experience working as an accountant at a responsible level within an organization is required.
