General Description: Under the supervision of the Network Services Manager, the WAN/LAN Administrator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and management of the Boston Housing Authority's (“BHA”) network servers and related peripherals. The WAN/LAN Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day performance and reliability of the operation of all parts of the BHA network infrastructure, including all switches, routers, firewalls and data circuits at all sites on the BHA network. The WAN/LAN Administrator will be responsible for working with BHA staff to analyze their computing needs and for presenting network configuration and management solutions to address these needs. In addition, the WAN/LAN Administrator will support the Network Services Manager in setting strategy and creating and implementing plans for the future configuration of the BHA’s wide area network.

Duties & Responsibilities: • Monitors network performance, and works with Server/DBA, Telecom and PC & Printer support staff and vendors to diagnose system bottlenecks and problems. • Works with MIS staff to manage network devices, including switches, routers, firewalls, MUX, traffic shaping devices, and all other local and wide-area network devices utilized by the BHA. • Works with MIS staff to design, manage and tune network configurations to ensure optimal network performance for each and every BHA site and for the BHA’s overall network. • Analyzes, assesses, and forecasts user needs for network utilization. • Monitors network performance in ‘real-time’ and alerts MIS staff to potential bottlenecks, as well as determines and resolves the causes of these issues in a timely fashion. • Works with staff and vendors to implement and upgrade network devices. • Participates in BHA staff training as necessary. • Responds to system problems and restore system functions as required. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience: The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences or related subject, 1 to 3 years hands-on experience with wide-area and local networks, including routing architecture (preferably for a large, multi-location business or public organization). Candidates must have experience in the diagnosis and resolution of user-oriented issues and technical issues. The candidate must be expert in wide-area and local network management and Cisco operating systems, including experience with Cisco and Dell switches and Cisco routers, and routing architecture. The candidate must be expert in administering TCP/IP. Must be experienced with configuring and administering firewalls, anti-virus, anti-spam, VPN, remote access solutions, and spyware applications. Candidate must possess strong communication skills and user support abilities. Candidate must be able to work as a part of a team of MIS professionals.
