General Description: Under the direct supervision of the Family Service Manager of the Community Services Department (CSD), the Family Services Advocate is responsible for support and oversight of comprehensive supportive social service programs for adults and families in all sites that CSD participates in. This position also involves quality assurance monitoring and oversight of service providers. The Family Services Advocates will initiate, develop and maintain appropriate intra-agency and inter-agency linkages needed to sustain an effective and cooperative human service delivery system for BHA residents.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Provides technical assistance to address housing managers’ and residents’ concern relevant to adult/ family social service needs and issues via needs assessment activities.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with local social services that enhance adult/ families' ability to access drug prevention/treatment information, ESL classes, parenting skill programs, computer skill training, remedial education, employment training, child care, GED classes, and other related economic and educational opportunities.
  • Works collaboratively with the Resident Health Advocates and Senior Manager in their effort to assist Tenant Task Forces and managers in bringing services (i.e. parenting skill, employment training, remedial education, etc.) to the site by working with community-based and citywide agencies who provide these services.
  • Assists Task Forces in organizing social, recreational and cultural activities for the residents.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications & Experience: High school or GED required. Three to four years of direct care experience with adults and families, preferably in mental health issues, government benefits and related health and community issues. Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to develop proposals and present program concepts are essential. Advocate skills among the above-described populations. Knowledge of social service networking and the cultural traditions of these populations is required.
