General Description: Under the supervision of the Network Administrator, the Network Support Specialist will assist in maintaining the Boston Housing Authority's ("BHA") local- and wide-area networks. The Network Support Specialist will assist in the maintenance and support of the BHA's networks, and will ensure that users' problems with the network's components and network utilities (printers, hubs, routers) are resolved in a timely and effective manner. Supports all aspects of The network, including the installation of client software and the performance of routine network servers maintenance and management.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Manages network user accounts (including basic access, individual and group security, and electronic mail), troubleshooting both local- and wide-area network connections, purging and restoring files, and printer set-up and configuration.
  • Holds responsibility for a variety of services and servers, including the external communications server, the group scheduling software, network-wide anti-virus software, file/system backup applications, and the fax server.
  • The Network Support Specialist will serve as a quick-response extension of the MIS Department's Help Desk.
  • The Network Support Specialist will often have to travel to locations throughout the City of Boston.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications & Experience: An Associates' Degree in computer technology, computer science, or management information systems, and familiarity with NT network operating systems, IPX and TCP/IP, and Intranet and Internet configuration. Experience with UNIX and product certification in network systems a plus. Candidate must possess strong communications and service skills, and must be willing to patiently and politely guide users through steps to resolve problems. A valid Massachusetts driver's license is required.
