Opening of the Waiting List |
The Boston Housing Authority (BHA) is pleased to announce the opening of the waiting list for the Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program for current participants in the BHA’s tenant based Housing Choice Voucher Program. The FSS Program is a voluntary program designed to help Section 8 families become more self-supporting and economically independent.
Participation in the FSS program is a requirement for persons wishing to apply to the Section 8 Homeownership program unless elderly or disabled. Due to the high demand for these programs, and the need to ensure fair and equal access to all Section 8 tenant based participants, the Boston Housing Authority is pleased to announce the following:
- Current BHA tenant-based Section 8 participants are eligible to apply for the FSS Program. All current BHA FSS participants do not need to apply. Non-BHA tenant-based Section 8 participants are not eligible for this program. All applications received/postmarked no later than June 10, 2008 will be placed in a lottery for determination of placement on the waiting list.
- A public lottery will be held at 10:00 A.M. on July 17, 2008 at the Amory Street Development, Training Room, at 125 Amory Street, Jamaica Plain, MA. A representative from the BHA Office of Civil Rights will monitor the lottery process.
- The BHA will use a computerized random lottery process to establish placement of each application on the FSS waiting list.
- Applicants do not need to attend the lottery to be eligible to participate. To ensure individual privacy, client numbers will be used as the identifiers of an application. Each applicant will be notified of their Lottery ranking status in writing by September 2, 2008.
- All individuals/families who wish to be considered for the Homeownership Program must apply to the FSS Program unless they qualify for a Reasonable Accommodation or can otherwise establish that they have previously met all requirements of the FSS Program.
- The FSS waiting list will remain open after the June 10, 2008 lottery deadline. Therefore, if you choose not to apply at this time you can apply at a future date. You will be placed on the list according to the date and time of your application is received by the BHA.
- If the applicant chooses not to apply, it will not affect his/her current section 8 subsidy. The application can be returned by mail before June 10. The lottery will be held on July 17 at Amory Street. Those who apply via mail should be sure to return it to the FSS Drop Box address on the application, they will receive a receipt and will be notified of their place on the waiting list after the lottery by mail.
- If you are a person with a disability and require assistance with this process or if you have any questions please contact 617-988-4030.
