City of Boston

Rental Housing Resource Center
With the termination of rent and eviction protections for most tenants in Boston at the end of calendar year 1996, the Rental Housing Resource Center (RHRC) has taken on the task of creating an environment whereby landlord-tenant relationships are fostered through a system of cooperation and compromise rather than regulation. The RHRC provides a variety of services to tenants and owners of Boston's residential housing stock.

Boston Home Center
The Home Center offers information on a range of programs and services available in Boston such as:

  • Information and registration for homebuyer education classes and counseling provided in the City of Boston.
  • Information on credit counseling and repair. Information on and referral to the various loan/grant programs offered to purchase or repair a home.
  • Applications for various properties being marketed by the City to income-eligible, first-time homebuyers.
  • Information on a variety of local lenders and their specialty mortgage programs.
  • General education pamphlets on technical and financial issues surrounding the purchase or repair of a home.
  • Information on and referral to foreclosure prevention services. Information on lending and home repair programs.
  • Information on predatory mortgage lending practices.

Emergency Shelter Commission
The mission of the Emergency Shelter Commission is to coordinate a safety net of services for Boston’s homeless and for persons in need of food assistance. The objectives of the Emergency Shelter Commission are to provide information and referral to homeless and hungry persons, to provide food assistance to families and individuals through the Can Share, food drives, and hunger grants, and to access resources for services and housing for homeless persons.

DHCD makes state and federal funds and technical assistance available to strengthen communities and help them plan new developments, encourage economic development, revitalize older areas, improve local government management, build and manage public housing, stimulate affordable housing through the private sector and respond to the needs of low-income people. The Office administers the state's public housing programs, coordinates its anti-poverty efforts, allocates federal community development programs and provides a variety of services to local government officials.

MassHousing
MassHousing is the state's affordable housing bank. We lend money at rates below the conventional market to support rental and home ownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

HUD is the federal department responsible for:

Organizations
MassNAHRO Section 8 Centralized Waiting List
The Massachusetts Chapter of NAHRO opened the new Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program Centralized Waiting List on January 6, 2003 in accordance with provisions contained in the United States Housing Act of 1937, as amended. Participating housing authorities (not BHA) are accepting applications for the Centralized Waiting List. Applicants need only apply to one of the participating housing authorities.

Mass Access
The Mass Accessible Housing Registry is a free program that helps people with disabilities find rental housing in Massachusetts, primarily accessible and barrier-free housing. The Mass Access database keeps track of accessible and affordable apartments throughout the state and maintains information about their availability.

Metropolitan Housing Opportunity Clearing Center
More popularly known as METROLIST this agency collects and provides information primarily about government subsidized apartments for rent, and homes for sale, in and around Boston.

Action for Boston Community Development
This private, non-profit, human services agency serves over 100,000 low-income residents through its central office and a decentralized, neighborhood-based, city-wide network.
