Approach to Preservation

In this report, we lay out several initiatives that, over the next 10 years, will generate more than $150 million for critical repairs within our public housing communities. Here is a Spanish version of the draft. We also plan to leverage significant additional private investment for redevelopment. Strategies include innovative public/private partnerships that will allow the BHA to improve conditions in our developments while staying true to our core mission of providing quality affordable housing for current and future residents.

We held a number of meetings and forums with resident leaders and other interested parties to discuss this report. During this period, we fielded numerous questions and below is a chart containing the concerns as well as the answers.

The responses to comments provide information about our intent and commitment as we move forward to preserve the portfolio. Most of the comments received concerned how we are planning to implement the Approach to Preservation rather than concerns about the concepts and initiatives outlined in the report. As such, we do not plan to change the report itself substantially, but will add a few clarifications and schedule details, and post an updated version of the report in September.

Our next public hearing will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at 6pm at 125 Amory Street, Jamaica Plain. The focus of this hearing will be to discuss the Washington Beech HOPE VI application as well as the Winthrop Garage proceeds. The BHA is proposing that up to $20 million of these proceeds be dedicated to the redevelopment of Washington Beech. Standard notices will be sent to the Resident Advisory Board, Monitoring Committee and Local Tenant Organizations.
