The Boston Housing Authority’s Community Services Department has launched a program at the Washington-Beech development -- the Resource and Development Program (WBRDP). The program is designed to address the economic and social needs of the resident families at the development. This program represents the BHA’s latest initiative in workforce development on behalf of public housing residents. Program participants can take advantage of the Walgreens Customer Service Training Program, employment and training efforts initiated under our Workforce Investment Board Memorandum of Agreement and other programs under development. We are looking to build on the key partnerships that were established under the Economic Development & Supportive Services (EDSS) Program, which began in 2000, including the Boston Private Industry Council, the Mayor’s Office for Jobs & Community Services, the Boston Workforce Development Coalition, Greater Boston Legal Services, the Job Training Alliance, Walgreens, and United Parcel Service.
Residents who come to the program will have access to a wide range of resources and information related to skills assessment, supportive services and job search using some of the same tools that exist at the One Stop Career Centers. The Washington-Beech residents will work with the residents services coordinator to develop an individualized service plan, which identifies goals and actions strategies for achieving economic self-sufficiency. Here is where the resident and the resident service coordinator will work together to achieve the goals set out in the individual service plan (ISP). The ISP will allow each resident the opportunity to improve the quality of his or her life.
Residents will also have access to detailed information on the most current education, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), job readiness, financial awareness, health and well-being, legal services, employment listings, and training opportunities. Applications are available on-site for residents to fill out. Many services are delivered on-site such as job searching, job readiness, and special events such as job fairs, open houses and community collaborations for economic development programs.
