The Occupancy Department receives and processes applications for admission to the Authority's public housing program and maintains the public housing waiting list. The initial application process, as well as questions regarding public housing in general or about status on the waiting list, are handled through the Department's Housing Service Center at 56 Chauncy Street. The Department also coordinates requests for resident transfers and oversees the transfer review process. Occupancy is responsible for the screening of prospective residents and for determinations as to their eligibility for housing. The Department also coordinates the offer and assignment of units for applicants and residents receiving new units.

BHA re-opens public housing waiting list
The Boston Housing Authority has announced the re-opening of its public housing waiting list on July 11. The list had been closed so that the Authority could implement a new site-based waiting list system. This important change has been completed and new applicants can now apply to any or all BHA developments they choose.

Designated Housing Plan
The Designated Housing plan is a five-year outline that provides guidelines for the allocation of housing units in the federal elderly/disabled housing program portfolio. The goal is to move these developments toward a resident population of 70 percent elderly and 30 percent non-elderly disabled.
